Purpose: To investigate the effect of oral consumption of magnesium on the memory and pain sensation of diabetic rats. Methods: A total of 48 rats were divided into four groups - untreated control, untreated diabetic, magnesium-treated control and magnesium-treated diabetic. Plasma magnesium and glucose concentrations were measured after induction of diabetes with streptozotocin (STZ; 60 mg/kg). Four weeks after the administration of oral magnesium (10 g/L, MgSO4), the animals were subjected to passive avoidance test whereby latency time (LT) was assessed. This was followed by formalin test which entailed the determination of licking and flinching scoresResults: Increased level of glucose and decreased concentration of magnesium in untreated diabetic group compared to untreated control group (p < 0.001) were observed. There was also a significant reduction in mean LT of untreated diabetic group (p < 0.001) as indicated by the increased number of animals that entered the dark compartment. Plasma glucose and magnesium levels in magnesium treated diabetic rats returned to normal 4 weeks after oral magnesium consumption. There was no significant change in mean total pain score despite elevated licking in diabetic animals after oral magnesium consumption. Significant elevation of flinching scores of untreated diabetic rats was observed in the last 20 min of the 2nd chronic phase, compared with the untreated control group. Conclusion: It seems that magnesium treatment either restores rat memory performance that is impaired by diabetes or that it affects the aversive responses evoked by electrical shock. Keywords: Diabetes, Magnesium, Glucose, Passive avoidance memory, Formalin test

Experimental investigation of dielectric barrier impact on breakdown voltage enhancement of copper wire-plane electrode systems

    Get PDF
Non-pressurized air is extensively used as basic insulation media in medium / high voltage equipments. An inherent property of air-insulated designs is that the systems tend to become physically large. Application of Dielectric barrier can increase the breakdown voltage and therefore decrease the size of the equipments. In this paper, the impact of dielectric barrier on breakdown voltage enhancement of a copper wire-plane system is investigated. For this purpose, the copper wire is covered with different dielectric materials. Depending on the air gap and dielectric strength of the barrier the breakdown can be initiated in the solid or gas dielectric. Theoretically, free charges are affected by the electric field between the electrodes and accumulated at the dielectric surface, this leads to the reduction of electric field in air gap and enhancement of the ifield in the dielectric layer. Therefore, with appropriate selection of the barrier thickness and material, it is possible to increase the breakdown voltage of the insulation system. The influence of different parameters like inter-electrode spacing, and dielectric material on the break-down voltage is investigated for applied 50 Hz AC and DC voltages. The results indicate that up to 240% increase of the breakdown voltage can be achieved

Background and Objectives: The main aim of architectural schools is to train professional architectures who can design and organize the living spaces for people. But unfortunately these days most of them have not reach this goal. The most important reason of this issue is that the topics in the architectural schools do not correspond with the needs of professional workplaces. So it is important for the architectural schools to train professional architects who have enough abilities to start working, design and build real places. The 5 courses of architectural design studio are very important in learning system of Iranian architectural Universities. So it is important to analyse different teaching methods and their effects on each of these courses. In the first part of this article, the course programs of architectural design 4 have been analysed. The topics, goals and the steps of each method is explained; and in the following the effect of inductive teaching method has been analysed at Khayyam University of Mashhad as the case study of the research. The hypotheses of the research explore that the inductive teaching method let the students design more creative and rational projects, fulfil the needs of the projects that have correct relations among the spaces. Methods: The case study is Khayam university of Mashhad because one of the researchers of this research has been teaching in this university for many years. The research method is descriptive and analytical and survey research; and information was gathered by a questionnaire, observation and documental studies. The validity of questionnaire is controlled by content validity method and the reliability of the information was controlled by triangular method. The gathered information were analysed with content analysis, Spss software, graphical and deductive analysis. Findings: The results show that inductive teaching system let the students design more rational projects, which fulfil the needs of the projects that have correct relations among the spaces. These projects will be more executive and reach the architectural training goals in the school’s topics, define a better relation between the standards of the project and creative concepts and ideas and finally these projects will have better space quality that correspond with the topic of the design. But this method of teaching design process restricts the student’s creativity. Conclusion: changing the teaching methods architectural schools, changes the design process and the results of the final projects. There is a meaningful relationship between the independent and dependent variable. Because the correlation coefficient between the method of teaching designing process and the final result is good. According to the results of field studies and the research’s background we can claim that there is a relation between the teaching method of design process and the results. Each of the teaching method, according to their goals and topics which they focus on, can be successful in designing a good architectural project that fits the needs and functional conditions    In future researchways to alleviate the problems ofthis instructional approach that led to limiting students’ creativity are recommended.   ===================================================================================== COPYRIGHTS  ©2020 The author(s). Introduction: In cases of severe hard tissue loss, 2 mm circumferential ferrule is difficult to achieve. So in these cases we should use different ferrule designs. This in vitro study investigated the effect of different ferrule designs on the fractureresistance of teeth restored with bonded post and cores.Materials and Methods: Forty freshly-extracted central incisors were endodontically treated. The teeth were randomly divided into four groups; group 1 were teeth with 2 mm circumferential ferrule above the CEJ, group 2 were teeth with 2 mm ferrule only on the palatal side of the teeth, group 3 consisted of teeth with 2 mm ferrule only on the facial side and group 4 were teeth with 2 mm ferrule on the palatal and facial side of teeth with interproximal concavities. All teeth were restored with fiber posts and composite cores. The specimen was mounted on a universal testing machine and compressive load was applied to the long axis of the specimen until failure occurred. Results: The fracture resistance was 533.79 ± 232.28 in group 1, 634.75± 133.35 in group 2, 828.90 ±118.27 in group 3 and 678.78± 160.20 in group 4. The post hoc analysis showed statistically significant difference between groups 1 and 3 .Conclusions: The results of this in vitro study showed that facial ferrule increases the fracture resistance of endodontically treated teeth restored with bonded post and cores

Introduction: Low testosterone level has strongly been correlated with body fat accumulation and abdominal obesity in men. Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate testosterone level in men with and without metabolic syndrome to determine the relationship between testosterone and metabolic syndrome. Patients and Methods: This case-control study was conducted on 172 cases of metabolic syndrome and 172 participants as a control group in Rasoul Akram hospital, Tehran, Iran. Demographic characteristics, fasting blood sugar (FBS), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), cholesterol, triglyceride (TG), and testosterone levels were recorded. SPSS version 21.0 and SAS version 9.1 were used for statistical analysis. Level of significance was considered 0.05. Results: The mean age of the two groups were 45.1 ± 9.3 years and 41.5 ± 11.2 years, respectively. There was a significant difference in serum testosterone levels between both groups and low testosterone levels were associated with metabolic syndrome (P < 0.001). Serum testosterone levels showed a significant negative correlation with age in the metabolic syndrome group (r =-0.16, P = 0.02). The relationship between metabolic syndrome and total plasma testosterone level using logistic regression model showed that, by increasing the total plasma testosterone level, the odds ratio for metabolic syndrome was 0.076 (95 CI: 0.027-0.216; P < 0.001). Conclusion: According to the results, low level of testosterone was related to the presence of metabolic syndrome in adult males. Future studies can investigate diagnostic value of testosterone level in this syndrome. © 2020 The Author(s)

We discuss the case of a 27-month-old girl afflicted with fibromuscular dysplasia. She presented with hemiatrophy of left upper and lower limbs, nail dystrophy, ulcers on the tips of her toes, cold and painful limbs, foot drop, and hypertension. The initial appearance started at 2 months of age and other diagnoses such as complex regional pain syndrome, reflex sympathetic syndrome, vasculitis and coagulation disorders had been considered. Angiography revealed that all the arterial branches of the left lower and upper limbs, from brachial to ulnar and radial, and from iliac and femoral to tibialis arteries were affected. Sural nerve biopsy confirmed the diagnosis. In the follow-up visits until 2 years after the patient’s discharge she did not develop any new problem and her blood pressure was controlled by enalapril and amlodipine

Measuring Servitization Progress and Outcome:The Case of ‘Advanced Services’

    Get PDF
The purpose of this paper is to establish a framework for assessing the progress and outcome of a manufacturer’s transformation towards becoming a provider of ‘advanced services’ – a complex bundling of products and services, whereby manufacturers offer capabilities and outcomes instead of products alone. ‘Advanced services’ represent the most complex offering in the current servitization trend among manufacturers. However, current performance measures lack the breadth and focus to assess progress or outcomes, and so support research and practice of organisational transformation efforts required. To address this gap the paper investigates how a manufacturer’s efforts to become an ‘advanced services’ provider can be comprehensively measured, and develops a framework for assessing the transformation journey towards becoming an ‘advanced services’ provider. The research method is based on (1) a systematic literature review process to create a comprehensive set of service-related performance measures that are available to assess a manufacturer’s servitization efforts, followed by (2) an engagement with an expert panel to synthesise the identified measures and create a set of ‘advanced services’ performance measures. The proposed framework is presented as a scorecard that can be used in practice to assess the progress and outcome of a manufacturer’s transformation towards becoming a provider of ‘advanced services’
